Cullinan

Cullinan is a arty historical town located in the Gauteng province of South Africa, approximately 30 kilometers east of Pretoria. Known for its rich mining history and quaint Victorian-era architecture, the town offers a glimpse into South Africa’s diamond heritage while serving as a popular tourist destination with a relaxed, small-town atmosphere.

History

Cullinan was established in 1902 after Sir Thomas Cullinan discovered diamonds in the area. The Cullinan Diamond Mine, originally known as the Premier Mine, is the centerpiece of the town’s history. It is most famous for producing the world’s largest rough diamond, the Cullinan Diamond, in 1905. Weighing an astonishing 3,106 carats, the diamond was later cut into several stones, some of which form part of the British Crown Jewels.

The town was designed as a residential and commercial hub for the mineworkers and their families, with many original buildings still standing. Its Victorian architecture and mining cottages are now considered cultural and historical treasures.

Current Town

Cullinan today is a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, attracting visitors with its tranquil environment and unique attractions. While mining remains a part of its identity, the town has diversified into tourism and hospitality.
