Historic Hub of Industry and Transport

Germiston is a prominent city in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa. Known for its industrial and transport significance, Germiston has grown from a modest mining settlement into a vital economic and logistical center.

Historical Overview

Founded in the late 19th century, Germiston owes its origins to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886. Two prospectors, John Jack from Germiston, Scotland, and August Simmer, played key roles in the establishment of the town. By 1887, the Simmer and Jack Gold Mine was operational, marking the beginning of Germiston’s rapid development. The city was officially proclaimed in 1903.

Germiston became the administrative seat of the East Rand and played a critical role in South Africa’s mining industry. It was home to the Rand Refinery, established in 1920, which remains one of the largest gold refineries in the world.

Transport Industry: Railways and Airports
Germiston is renowned as a transport hub, with its strategic location contributing significantly to the growth of South Africa's economy.

Railways

Germiston’s railway station is one of the busiest in South Africa and serves as the central junction for the country's rail network. Established during the height of the mining boom, the station connected mines to processing plants and export routes, facilitating the transport of gold and other minerals. Today, the rail network in Germiston supports both freight and passenger services. Not generally used by tourists for public transport.

Airports

The Rand Airport, located in Germiston, opened in 1931 and served as Johannesburg's primary airport until the opening of Jan Smuts Airport (now OR Tambo International Airport) in 1952. Rand Airport was once a key international gateway and remains active as a general aviation airport. It is known for its historical significance and houses a collection of vintage aircraft, making it a popular spot for aviation enthusiasts.

Modern-Day Germiston

Today, Germiston is a bustling industrial and commercial town. It's economy is driven by industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and retail. The city’s transport infrastructure continues to play a vital role, with road networks connecting it to major highways like the N3 and N17.
