1. Melville Koppies Nature Reserve
Location: Off Judith Road, Emmarentia/Melville
Distance: ~5 km circular trail
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Indigenous flora, Iron Age archaeological site, and views over Johannesburg.
Open: Sundays (guided hikes only in the reserve’s core)
Entry: R90 donation (guided), or free on open days

2. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens
Location: Malcolm Rd, Poortview, Roodepoort
Distance: Trails range from 1 km to 3.5 km
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Highlights: Waterfall, nesting Verreaux’s eagles, landscaped gardens
Entry Fee: R70 for adults

3. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve
Location: Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park
Distance: 4 km to 12 km
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Highlights: Free roaming game (zebra, antelope), ruins, birdwatching
Entry Fee: Free

4. Modderfontein Reserve
Location: Arden Road, Modderfontein
Distance: Several trails, up to 10 km
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Highlights: Lakes, wildlife, picnic areas
Entry Fee: R40 adults / R20 kids

5. Hennops Hiking Trail (Just outside JHB)
Location: Near Hartbeespoort (~45 min from JHB)
Distance: 2.5 km – 11.5 km
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Highlights: Suspension bridge, cable car river crossing, caves
Entry Fee: R100 (subject to change)

6. Groenkloof Nature Reserve (Pretoria, but popular with JHB hikers)
Distance: Trails from 3.5 km to 10 km

Wildlife: Giraffe, zebra, kudu
Entry Fee: ~R50 adults

Tips for Hiking in Johannesburg
Safety: Hike in groups and avoid remote trails alone
Time: Mornings are best—less heat, more wildlife
Essentials: Water, hat, sunscreen, snacks, sturdy shoes
