The Johannesburg Civic Theatre, now rebranded as Joburg Theatre, is a premier performing arts complex situated atop Braamfontein Hill, Johannesburg. Since its opening in 1962, the venue has evolved into a cultural landmark and remains one of the most technically advanced theatre spaces in the Southern Hemisphere.

History & Transformation
Built in 1962 to celebrate South Africa’s Union Festival; opened on 27 August 1962 with Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann
Originally a whites-only venue under apartheid, it gradually desegregated from the late 1970s onward
Rebranded as Joburg Theatre in 2009, and is now operated by a municipal entity (Joburg Theatre SOC Ltd), separate from the city council since 2000
