Sterkfontein Caves

Located northwest of Johannesburg in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, the Sterkfontein Caves are a globally significant archaeological site renowned for early hominid fossils and ancient limestone chambers. The guided tour takes you underground, through dramatic rock formations and the excavation sites where discoveries like “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot” were made.
What to Expect
Tours last about 1 hour to 1½ hours, with guided commentary throughout.
Operating days: Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays).
Typical opening hours: 09:00 – 16:00, with the last tour departing at 16:00.
Capacity per tour is around 30 people—booking ahead is strongly recommended.
