When you've had your fill of dark wood tables and crisp white linen and city-slicker dining, head out to THE FAT OLIVE COUNTRY RESTAURANT in Muldersdrift, where the atmosphere's laid-back and the food sublime.

In warm weather, sit outdoors and tuck into the hot-from-the-oven bread and olive tapenade while dithering over the choice on the regularly-changed blackboard menu. It's delicious country fare with flair... oven roasted Brie in filo pastry with ginger and fig preserve; tagliolini topped with calamari tubes with pineapple and asparagus in a tangy curry paste; a fresh garden salad livened up with slices of chorizo; a fabulous feta and beetroot couscous salad. The grilled baby chicken with hickory crust and an apricot, chilli and coriander glaze went down a treat as did the trio of lamb chops served with fresh, crisp veggies.(Not to mention the rare rump topped with chicken liver pate, bacon and black cherry sauce). With huge rambling grounds and nothing to break, this is the perfect lunch venue for families. Child-friendly versions of the food are on offer for the kids! Huge glasses of wine from a small, well-priced list ensured our party was relaxed and happy and all set to linger long, long into the afternoon.

The restaurant belongs to Tom Goldie and chef Jean-Marc Flaschner (whom many will remember from Browns of Rivonia and CiroÕs in Parktown North. It's well worth supporting... we'll be back again and again and again! (REVIEW, LEISURE OPTIONS)
