UNISA Art Gallery
UNISA Art Gallery owns a collection of largely contemporary South African art and a most valuable cultural asset. Promoting culturally diverse relevant art, there are student exhibitions, outreach and international exhibitions. Contact us for current evenets. The Gallery's opened in 1986, with its first full time Curator.
The Unisa Art Gallery as a valuable cultural asset, aims at national and international relevance by promoting the culturally diverse manifestations of the visual arts. Within the spirit of academic excellence and cultural relevance, the Unisa Art Gallery strives to collect, document and conserve primarily South African art.
Showcasing innovative exhibitions to encourage academic engagement.
EXHIBITIONS: Exhibitions expose and focus on diverse and relevant aspects in the arts. It includes regular exhibitions of the Unisa Art Collection, as well as exhibitions curated by Unisa Art Gallery considering current research of historical, cultural and educational value as well as significant travelling exhibitions curated by other institutions. Student exhibitions, community outreach exhibitions and international exhibitions also provide the opportunity for endless creative and intellectual stimulation. Opening events, slide presentations and walk abouts are arranged in order to relate exhibitions and to provide a platform of interaction.
UNISA ART COLLECTION: The Collection at present consists of a good cross section of early to contemporary South African art - drawings, graphics, photography, woven tapestries, appliqués, sculpture and mixed media works.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Community outreach is a priority of the Gallery and is integrated in all our activities. Disadvantaged artists and young up and coming artists are invited to all functions, lectures, workshops and exhibitions.
When funds are available, arrangements for children to attend exhibitions are made with the schools and particular bus companies to collect and transport the students to and from the Gallery.
